More choices - Opinion & Analysis

Automotive Industries,  Nov, 2002  by Ray Windecker

Never before has the automotive industry offered customers such a wide product selection. Niche markets have split into mini-niches and many current vehicles defy yesterday's segmentation.

As examples, it is reasonable to judge the PT Cruiser as a small, low-roof station wagon and the Rendezvous as a midsize high-roof station wagon. Yet "station wagon" is a negative term, so here they are called WAGON/SUVs, thus no doubt irritating several people at DaimlerChrysler and General Motors.

Shown in the graph are 21 segments, their 2002 model-year sales, year-over-year change and comparable data for the leading vehicle in each segment Admittedly, there will be little agreement on the definition and scope of these segments, as there are marketing, product and analytic people now defining new ways to market mini-split segments as new concepts to lure a few additional buyers into their camp. The numbers, however, reflect which approaches are working.
