South Africa extends tariff-cut plan - International Trends - Brief Article

Automotive Industries,  Dec, 2002  by Andrea Wielgat

The government of South Africa is extending its plan to cut tariffs on imported cars and trucks. The Motor industry Development, Program started in 1995 as a way to open up the auto industry. It was expected to conclude in 2007 but will now end in 2012. As part of the plan, light vehicle duties will drop from today's 40 percent to 30 percent in 2007 and to 25 percent by 2012.
