2002 Acura 3.2TL Type-S - Cars Worth Noting - Brief Article

Automotive Industries,  Feb, 2002  by John Peter

Take heed you purveyors of performance, you touters of telematic technology. The new TL has made quite an impact on those who have come in contact, and not for the reasons you might think.

Yes, they love the power from the 260 hp 3.2L VTEC V-6, even if they don't realize that the increased power comes from a unique-to-the-Type-S dual plenum induction system. The two-chamber intake plenum is separated by a valve, which opens at 3,800 rpm, increasing airflow and pressurizing the manifold air; which produces a natural supercharger effect.

They haven't overlooked the quiet ride, superb handling and low NVH (thanks to a solid body structure and the sport-tuned suspension).

They're all smiles when the Bose sound system is fired up after they've loaded the in-dash 6-CD changer (new for '02), filling the roomy leather-clad interior with brilliant sound.

They might test the sequential-shift 5-speed transmission, but they could be just as happy leaving it in auto. And they might need the DVD-based navigation system (the only option on the Type-S); but then again, they might turn it off if they don't need it and wonder where the clock went.

Yes, there's a lot to like about the 2002 3.2TL Type-S, from the 17-inch alloy wheels all the way up to the moon roof, from the re-designed front fascia to the new tail lamp treatment.

But what was it that drew them to the new TL? It was the rich, deep blue paint.

First impressions really do matter.
