Opel To `Railroad' Better Market Share

Automotive Industries,  April, 1999  by Marjorie Sorge

Beginning this month and continuing for the next two years, the Opel Millenium Express train will traverse Europe, showing off Opel products, while experts gather customer data that Opel will use for future product development.

"You need to understand the lifestyle in Europe," says Opel chief Bob Hendry. "You can't just look at what's selling That is just a shadow."

GM Europe wants to boost its Pan European market share from today's 9.7% to 10.5%, but to do that it must get a better grip on customer needs, says GM Europe President Mike Bums. He believes the future holds more niche vehicles like the '99 Zaphira, a station-wagon-like crossover built off the Astra.

Plus, GM Europe will hype Opel's German heritage. "We lost emphasis on that in the last four or five years," Hendry says. That caused dissenion among Opel employees that Hendry and Burns are working hard to bridge. One visible move is the new Speedster concept vehicle, an affordable sports car that got good reviews at the Geneva Auto Show.
