Toyota's New President Has Kentucky Roots

Norman Martin

Who is Fujio Cho? He's the new president of Toyota Motor Corp. The 62-year-old Cho ran Toyota's U.S. manufacturing operation for six years, including setting up the company's Kentucky plant from scratch. "When I went to the United States, them was nothing," Cho says. He joined Toyota in 1960 and previously served as executive vice president. Cho replaces Hiroshi Okuda, 66, who will become chairman, a high-flying title but in Japan a position considered less responsible than president. The blunt-speaking and growth-oriented Okuda served four years as president.
