Where's A B-2 When You Need It?

Automotive Industries, May, 1999

How bad is your industrial infrastructure when the Yugo car plant is considered a strategic target? During the early stages of the air war on Serbia, NATO targeted at least; seven missiles at the Zastava plant, which makes Yugos, in Kragujevac. Zastava produced 14,000 cars last year; it employs some 26,000 workers.

Military officials noted that Zastava is also Serbia's primary producer of small arms. The last time Yugos got this much attention was in '97 when New York art professor Kevin O'Callaghan bought 39 rusty Yugos for $3,600 and asked his students to make objects of functional art from them. Yugos were turned into a toaster, port-o-potty and, appropriately, a shooting gallery.
