Last month Ford sent Project Amazon -- an innovative $1 billion factory in a southern Brazilian state -- down the river. Brazil had refused to honor a pledge to provide the company with some $250 million in financing and infrastructure because of its budget crisis, and Ford walked. Meanwhile, GM is nearing completion (mid-2000) of its own futuristic plant in Rio Grande do Sul.
