Chrysler-Badged Golf-Fighter Likely For Europe

Automotive Industries,  July, 1999  by Mark Bursa

DaimlerChrysler is "seriously considering" a Golf-sized compact for the European market, to be sold under the Chrysler nameplate. Jurgen Hubbert, head of DC's Mercedes-Benz car division, says it's likely such a car will be built. "The question is more how, than if," he notes, adding that a decision win be made this year.

Production would begin in late 2002, or 2003. Designed for the European market, the all-new model will contain elements of American styling, Hubbert reveals. Production would probably be at DC's Graz, Austria, plant or even at the Smart plant in northern France. "It would make sense to build a car meant for Europe in Europe," Hubbert adds.
