Sales of four-wheel-drive variant vehicles are on the rise in Japan with Toyota selling the most but Suzuki seeing the highest-percentage increase.
The Japanese market for four-wheel-drive vehicles grew slightly in 2001, rising 1% to 1.35 million units and representing nearly one-fifth of new car and truck sales. The total was 27% below the 1996 peak of 1.86 million.
Meanwhile, sales of traditional "off-road" vehicles, powered by new entries like the Nissan X-Trail and Toyota Kluger V, rose 10% to 256,913 units, reversing a four-year downturn from a peak of 449,460 in 1996. Sales in 2000 fell to 223,605 units.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s Pajero SUV, Japan's 4WD benchmark, has witnessed a decline from 81,700 units in 1992 to 1,000 units today. Other big losers include Nissan Motor Co.'s Terrano and Toyota Motor Corp.'s 4WD Land Cruiser.
In other product segments, sales of 4W0 minivehicles totaled 552,652 units during the year, the third highest number on record. In 2001, minivehicles accounted for 41% of 4W0 demand. More importantly, sedans and hatchbacks now account for 55% of sales of 4WD minis. Against this backdrop, the share held by 660cc trucks now stands at 33%, down from 50% in 1991 and 63% in 1981.
Above 660cc, Toyota sold 320,818 units in 2001. Toyota, with 58 model variants, was followed by Nissan, at 126,994 units, and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., at 102,951.
The leading model was Fuji's Subaru Legacy, at 62,772 units, followed by Toyota's Estima van, at 40,415, and Nissan's X-Trail, at 39,001.
The big winners during the year were Nissan, Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Co. and Suzuki Motor Co., with sales up 113.5%, 19.8%, 19.3% and 48.3% respectively. The big losers were Mitsubishi and Fuji, with sales off 21.4% and 11.4%.
In a related development, global demand for coupling devices, key to increased sales of front-wheel-drive 4WD systems, is expected to grow to 2.3 million units in 2005, up from 1.9. million last year, according to an industry estimate.
