Your Government At Work - ARGENTINE

Automotive Industries,  August, 1999

Talk about rebates. In an effort to rescue autoworkers facing major layoffs, the Argentine government recently launched a rather unique swap program. The plan cut prices of new Argentine-made vehicles between $4,800 and $22,000 for buyers trading in models over 10 years old. The government assumes about 70% of the rebate.

The plan is supposed to boost '99 output from less than 300,000 to 350,000 units. Last year, 460,000 Argentine vehicles were churned out.
