Ghosn Plans Nissan's Comeback - Brief Article

Automotive Industries,  August, 1999  by Mark Bursa

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says "Nissan will have to come back to profit very quickly. I'm saying specifically the year 2000." Additionally, he hints Nissan may have to close plants if sales do not increase quickly. "We have over-invested for what we sell," he says.

In the U.S., Nissan will introduce a series of new light trucks, possibly even in the full-size pickup segment. He adds that it will take at least three years to sell Nissan-badged Renault cars in the U.S.

He also suggests that Nissan, "will study leveraging Renault's investment to develop the Nissan brand and products in Brazil." Nissan plans to use fewer suppliers, involving more global suppliers in a bid to reduce supplier costs, Ghosn says. Nissan's supply base accounts for 65% of the automaker's costs.
