Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, March 1, 2003 by Michael Learmonth

Byline: Michael Learmonth

There was a time when publishers paid a pretty penny to hold Web domains that resembled their beloved brands. Apparently that time has past. That's the conclusion we came to when we received a spam e-mail offering us the opportunity to buy rollingstone.net for $1,400. The domain is owned by Mark Segal, London-based proprietor of Namegiant.com. Segal disputes the notion that Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner would be the most likely bidder. "I think it pertains more to a type of music than to any specific publication," he says. Asked if Wenner Media had any interest in acquiring the domain, a spokeswoman said, "I doubt we would. We already have a Web site." FOLIO: considered the opportunity, but decided to pass. We're still saving our pennies to acquire folio.com, owned by a software firm in Lehi, Utah.
