Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, March 1, 2003

For one black-tie night, New York City's Waldorf-Astoria was the capital of magazinedom. Essence founder Edward Lewis and GQ editor Art Cooper were honored by the Magazine Publishers of America and the American Society of Magazine Editors, respectively. The always-elegant Lewis received the Henry Johnson Fisher Award, while Cooper was inducted - after two decades at Conde Nast - into the Editors' Hall of Fame. The real fun started afterward, however, at the parties upstairs; GQ commandeered the Waldorf's Presidential Suite, and Essence claimed the penthouse.

Days later, Fashion Week exploded on the city. A suddenly stylish Time magazine invited a few thousand of its closest friends to celebrate its special "Style & Design" issue. Meanwhile, Elle Decor, Lucky, and Interview all held soirees of their own. Soon after, the leading fashionistas decamped for the big shows in Europe, leaving mags to party on, albeit less beautifully.
