Reader Makes Own Rules

I very much enjoyed your column, "Writing the Unwritten Rules," (December 15, 2000, page 15). Frustrated by the lack of quality training, I've compiled my own procedures manual during each of my editorial tenures. I've been accused of wasting valuable company time and praised for taking the initiative on something that my supervisor couldn't find time to do.

It's after I have moved on from those positions that I hear from co-workers the real value of my efforts: It makes it so much easier to train my replacement! Even the boss who said I was wasting company time admitted that it was nice to hand a notebook of organized details to my replacements.

Bravo for tackling this issue!
