Small Magazines We Adore

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, May 1, 2003 by Michael Learmonth

Byline: Michael Learmonth

WHAT ITS ABOUT: Nanotechnology, small devices built on a scale of one-billionth of a meter. Nano hit the pop imagination last year with the publication of Michael Crichton's "Prey," a thriller about killer nano-swarms. Nano-scaled technology is poised to change just about everything we touch, from computers to everyday clothing.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Small Times is putting the "gee whiz" back in business writing. It's the first nano mag written by small-minded journalists so that even CEOs (and the rest of us) can understand the material.

AD BASE: The 30,000-controlled-circ title is bankrolled by Ardesta, a family of nano companies. Lots of ads from tech startups and states hoping to attract nano investment.

VERDICT: Small Times could do for nano what the computer magazines did for the personal computer in the 1980s.
