Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, May, 2001 by Wendy L. Bonifazi

Presented for the past seven years and administered through the Business Press Education Foundation, the McAllister Editorial Fellowship promotes the study of writing for business-to-business publications and features tutorial visits by ABP Neal Award winners to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

The award is named for Donald McAllister, Sr., who served as ABP's chairman in 1955. Mr. McAllister was active in specialized business publications until his death in 1993 and spent his life trying to interest and educate journalism students about the trade press. The McAllister Fellow receives a crystal bowl and an honorarium.

The seventh recipient of the McAllister Editorial Fellowship is Wendy L. Bonifazi. She is a contributing writer and columnist for Contemporary Long Term Care; she has covered science, medicine and health issues for several other periodicals, including National Foods Merchandiser, OR (Operating Room) Manager and Arthritis Today, and several websites.

Ms. Bonifazi has degrees in journalism, psychology/child life and nursing. Before becoming a full-time journalist, she was the director of patient education and community relations for non-profit health care organizations, hospitals and nursing homes in New York and New Hampshire, where she created community education programs, patient handbooks and publicity campaigns. She has also taught at Mohawk Valley Community College, University of New Hampshire and Colorado State University.

Ms. Bonifazi has received a Neal Award, the Writer's Digest Best Article Award and the American Hospital Association Award for Writing Excellence. She is also a finalist in this year's Neal Awards competition.
