2001 Crain Award

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, May, 2001 by James D. Winsor

James D. Winsor, Executive Editor of Heavy Duty Trucking, is the recipient of the 2001 Crain Award. Mr. Winsor began his publishing career in 1957 at Commercial Carrier Journal (CCJ). With hands-on background from his days as a heavy truck driver in the Army, he worked his way up to Chief Editor by 1970. His coverage of the fuel shortages of the seventies paved the way for features on fuel economy. He won his first Neal Award for his coverage of trucking industry fuel inefficiencies.

Other stories that CCJ covered under his guidance include the controversy over antilock brakes, the deregulation of trucking, and the transportation plight of the Navajo Indians, for which Mr. Winsor was honored by the Navajo nation.

In 1970, he helped to found Owner Operator for owner-drivers. In 1982, Mr. Winsor joined Newport Communications as executive director. He has helped to build Heavy Duty Trucking, RoadStar, Truck Sales Leasing, and Truckstop Travel Plaza into industry leaders. He oversees most technical articles appearing in all four publications, contributes to many of their features, and writes monthly columns, in addition to directing their theme issues.

Still a federally licensed commercial truck driver, Mr. Winsor has volunteered to deliver hay to starving livestock, relief supplies to Hurricane Andrew survivors, and the National Christmas Tree to the White House.
