Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, June 1, 2003 by Susan Thea Posnock

Byline: Susan Thea Posnock

It's June. Love, or something very much like it, is in the air. To observe the season, Folio: this month takes a look at magazine people who are, literally, married to the industry. Here's just a few of the nearly 30 couples we know about.

THE MERGER: Jeannine Sho Collins, vice president/group publisher at Meredith Publishing and Chris Collins, vice president/publisher of ESPN The Magazine

When: 10 years ago in December

He Says: "We do a lot of crossover entertaining. You can sort of kill two birds with one stone.... We can also troll for each other. It's like having an extra set of feet on the street."

She Says: "We've always had different perspectives. I've always had these mature brands and he's always trying to build the brand.... I've never run into him in a waiting room in New York, but I've run into him across the country."

THE MERGER: Christina Kelly, editor-in-chief, YM and Dalton Ross, staff writer, Entertainment Weekly

When: 4 years ago

He Says: "We've managed to get our son Dale into both magazines. Now we have a daughter Violet; she's going to want the cover of Rolling Stone."

She Says: "He doesn't show me things before they're printed because he doesn't like me editing them."

THE MERGER: Susan Ungaro, editor-in-chief, Family Circle and Colin Ungaro, divisional president, Reed Business Information Group

When: 25 years ago

He Says: "Thankfully she's on the consumer side. We're not competitive as a pair; however, if we were both in b-to-b there might be a little more of that element in our marriage."

She Says: "Colin used to be an editor and then he went to the business side. With separation of church and state, he helps me understand how the state really feels when I have my editorial whine."

THE MERGER: Robert Newman, creative director, Real Simple and Christine Curry, illustration editor, The New Yorker

When: 9 months ago

He Says: "It was very humbling for me at first because when we'd go out and meet people they were more impressed by [Chris working at The New Yorker]. Now that I work at Real Simple, the tables are turned because we have a child and hang out with people who have children and they're much more impressed with Real Simple because they don't have time to read The New Yorker."

She Says: "I'm happy he's enjoying that same feeling of success. Now I can kind of hang back and watch people praising him."

THE MERGER: MARK STANICH, senior vice president/chief marketing officer of American Express Publishing and Lauren Stanich, president of publishing, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia

When: 12 years ago

He Says: "It is so important, even necessary, to clearly call a 'time out' on shop talk at the end of our long days, or you'll end up discussing ratebase strategy into the wee hours of the morning - when, believe me, there is much more fun that can be had."

She Says: Declined to comment.

FUTURE MERGER: John Rollins, former Spin president and Vibe/Spin Ventures group publisher (now working as publisher and CEO for Good Music Media) and Dana Sacher, former vice president and general manager at Vibe/Spin (now COO for Good Music)

When: Marrying September 12

He Says: "We'd already set our wedding date, and it turns out that during our wedding we'll be closing our first issue. So right after the wedding its back to New York to finish up."

She Says: "I'm very excited about both [the wedding and the magazine]. There couldn't be two more major things happening in our lives at the same time, but I'm a little bit more excited about the wedding."
