Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, August 1, 2003

Hello? Is anyone still in the office? With everyone on vacation at the end of summer (or dreaming of being gone), August is the slowest month. Who wants to entertain clients with a cocktail party when the clients themselves would rather be at the beach? That said, there's always summer school, as New York publishing execs are fond of popping in at the magazine programs at Columbia and NYU to reassure the kids that they just might find a job when they graduate.

August is also the last month to throw a garden party, host a soiree on a pier, or have a picnic at a baseball game. After Labor Day, it's back to standing around in a dark room with a drink in your hand. September will be here soon enough.
