D suspends publication, while Atlanta attracts new suitors - D Magazine; Atlanta Magazine - Brief Article

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, July 1, 1993

After at least five months of publicly shopping the title, American Express Publishing suspended Dallas-based D at the end of May. At press time, former Dallas Business Journal publisher Tom Allen was still trying to buy the 19-year-old magazine. Meanwhile, a new player emerged among the contenders for D's sister publication, Atlanta.

Mary Ann and Edgar Holley, the husband and wife who once published Sazz--a short-lived title for upscale black women--are heading up a group of investors vying against a host of other bidders, including Atlanta publisher Tom Casey and Indianapolis-based Emmis Broadcasting (publisher of Indianapolis Monthly). The new owner of the 100,000-circulation title could reap a bonanza from the city's hosting of the 1996 Summer Olympics.
