Ziff-Davis to stay put - Ziff-Davis Publishing Co - Brief Article

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, July 1, 1993

Billionaire publisher William Ziff, who had been mulling a relocation of Ziff-Davis' corporate headquarters, is keeping the company in the Big Apple. Ziff had considered Denver a viable option until the Colorado legislature voted down a $40 million economic incentive package for Ziff in early May. With Salt Lake City having already been ruled out, Ziff decided to keep his 1,200 New York City-based employees at their current site on lower Park Avenue. Another 800 employees will stay put in the company's Medford, Massachusetts, offices.

Ziff, who owns a ski home in Aspen, had considered relocating the company to be closer to the microcomputer industry its magazines cover. But ever since word got out late last year, the plan had drawn flak from two fronts.

Many employees viewed a move to Colorado as politically incorrect, considering that state's passage last November of an amendment overturning local laws in support of gay civil rights. others did not want to face the prospect of having to sell their East Coast homes in a depressed real estate market.
