Discover plans own online service - Walt Disney Co. Walt Disney Publications Inc.'s Discover Online - Brief Article

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, Sept 1, 1994

Shunning the installed bases and unattractive revenue splits of the commercial online services, Walt Disney Publishing's Discover has decided to develop its own online service. Discover Online is scheduled to be running by next spring, probably as a joint venture with UNET2 Corp., a New York City-based electronic printer whose clients include Parents, TV Guide and Sierra.

The service will tap into the wealth of science-related information currently available from the National Institutes of Health and NASA, and the latest scientific discoveries from top universities. Discover Online will centralize these dispersed sources in one area, while bringing a critical eye to the torrent of new information. "Online services will become increasingly more like editors," says director of business development David Fishman. "It's like drinking from a fire hose right now - there's too much information."
