Redesigns and relaunches: building a new look - Remodeling magazine - Brief Article

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, Sept 15, 1993 by Lori Marden

Nearly two years ago when the folks at Hanley-Wood, Inc., decided to redesign Remodeling, they went to their readers to find out what they liked--and didn't--about the magazine. Remodelers responded, saying they wanted greater involvement with the magazine. The results of the survey, effective with the July issue, led to the addition of reader-generated Q&A sections on business and construction, a fax poll page and a reader-submitted column on selling. Other changes include organization of editorial into color-coded sections to make subjects easier to find, more photos and a gatefold that stretches the coverlines and draws the reader into the magazine.

Says chief editor Wendy Jordan, "Remodeling's new design is not just a pretty face. It's definitely bolder, brighter and more fun to read, but the content--and how the magazine is organized--has changed to reflect two years of extensive research on reader opinions, attitudes and information needs."

According to publisher and editor Larry Warsh, "It is a must-have travelogue through the city's cultural collections and treasures |and aims to~ educate consumers about the invaluable benefits of the museum experience."

Circulation is 50,000 paid and nonpaid. The subscription rate is $14.95; the cover price is $2.95. The cost of a black-and-white advertising page is $2,275. Address: 401 Broadway, Suite 1111, New York, NY 10013. Telephone 212-274-1305.
