Conde Nast's Fuchs lands Hearst post - Conde Nast Publications Inc.; Vogue publisher Anne Sutherland Fuchs, Hearst Magazines; includes other publisher executive changes - Brief Article

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, Oct 1, 1994

After months of speculation that Harper's Bazaar publisher Carl Portale would be getting the boot in favor of former Vogue publisher Anne Sutherland Fuchs, a variation on the theme finally played out in late August. Portale, who had been publisher since April 1991, becomes director of special projects for Hearst Magazines, entrusted with determining the feasibility of a Hearst custom publishing division.

Fuchs--whose days at Conde Nast were considered numbered after she was bumped upstairs (as senior vp/director, International) when Ron Galotti was lured back from Hearst's Esquire and given her Vogue job--is now senior vice president/group publishing director of Harper's Bazaar, Town & Country and Marie Claire. Jeanette Chang has been promoted from associate publisher to the publisher's slot at Bazaar. She, T&C publisher Molly Schaefer, and Marie Claire group director/advertising Nancy LeWinter now report to Fuchs. Although Harper's Bazaar had been posting excellent advertising numbers since Liz Tilberis took over as editor in 1992, there has been a recent dropoff. And although September's 313 ad pages made that issue the largest in the magazine's history, insiders say Chang and others did most of the work, while Portale got the credit. He did not get too involved in the day-to-day selling, and his strong suit was the fashion side of the business, not beauty or other categories.
