Business as usual for Hong Kong?

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, Nov 15, 1996 by Caitlin Kelly

In his speeches, Patten has repeatedly urged the local press to take a tough stand themselves, fighting any urge to self-censor. "If you are defeatist, then defeat is inevitable ... I hear of too many journalists quitting to be entirely sanguine about the future," he told one audience. "I urge you to stay, to stand up for your rights."

Moriarty agrees: "Publish and be damned," he advises. "Only those who stand up for what they believe get respect; once you have rolled over, it is assumed you will roll over forever."
