New prepress push for Adobe

Adobe Systems Inc. sees bright future for its prepress customers. In January, the Mountain View, California-based software giant licensed its prepress products to newly formed Luminous Corp., a privately owned spin-off in which Adobe has a minority interest.

Adobe will continue to develop core technologies, such as trapping, imposition and OPI, and license them to OEMs. "More than ever, we are committed to developing products for the higher end printing and publishing markets," says an Adobe spokeswoman.

The move does not directly affect the popular authoring applications--PageMaker, Illustrator and Photoshop--used in the graphics arts and publishing industries.

According to Luminous president and CEO Jim Betlyon, the Seattle-based company will create new distribution channels for prepress applications such as Adobe Virtual Network version 1.0, ColorCentral, PressWise, TrapWise, PrintCentral, PrePrintPro and OPEN.
