White House recognizes literacy efforts

Score one for San Francisco-based Miller Freeman. the publishing company's year-old literacy program for the homeless was cited by the White House and the National Volunteer Center for "recognizing, inspiring and encouraging exemplary volunteer achievement."

Miller Freeman was one of 56 companies designated runners-up in the President's Volunteer Action Awards, which recognize innovative volunteer projects. More than 3,500 entries were submitted for the annual competition.

Approximately 50 Miller Freeman employees have worked in the program. They provide tutoring, assist students in writing workshops, and help them produce a newsletter.
