QuarkXPress to import PageMaker files

Folio: The Magazine for Magazine Management, Sept 1, 1991 by Liz Horton

When graphic designer Steve Roth reviewed page layout programs PageMaker 4.0 and QuarkXPress 3.0 for FOLIO: a year ago, he concluded, "Now if there were only some way to move laid-out pages between the two programs ......

At last, there is-at least in one direction. With Quark's PM Import, Macintosh users will be able to import documents created in Aldus PageMaker 4.0 and 4.01 into QuarkXPress 3.0, and then store them in QuarkXPress. (Quark has no plans for a PC version for its upcoming QuarkXPress for Windows.)

A beta version has been posted on electronic bulletin boards, and Quark is collecting user comments before releasing the final version.

Some criticisms are that the program doesn't import tracking, manual kerning, style sheets or rotated text from PageMaker.

A spokesperson for Aldus PageMaker reports no plans for a similar Quark conversion. -Liz Horton.
