Kmart, Wal-Mart promote Viagra

Discount Store News, June 8, 1998

TROY, MICH./BENTONVILLE, ARK. -- Kmart and Wal-Mart are aggressively pursuing the market for the popular potency pill Viagra.

Kmart has taken out national newspaper ads to promote its price of $39.99 for a five-tablet prescription, and Wal-Mart is offering the drug at its unadvertised everyday low price of $38.98. At pharmacies around the country, Viagra has been selling for about $10 per pill, or $50 for five tablets.

Viagra, developed by Pfizer, went on the market March 27 amid much publicity. Even former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kansas, discussed his use of Viagra.

Early estimates that the drug could garner $300 million in sales in its first year have since been increased by analysts to top $1 billion and could exceed $3.5 billion within four years.
