Canadian Xmas: retail confidence up

Discount Store News, Dec 8, 1997

TORONTO - Canadian retailers are looking for a better Christmas this year.

A recent study by American Express and the Retail Council of Canada found that Canadians are heading back to the malls as an increase in consumer confidence drives a revival in the retail sector. Overall sales this year are already up 6% to 7%.

The national Consumer PulseCheck Survey of 800 people found that department stores still rank as the most frequently visited environment, with 47% of those surveyed saying they regularly shop there, and another 35% saying they shop there occasionally.

Approximately 27% of consumers said they frequently shop at specialty stores, including the big-box superstores. Another 34% visit occasionally. Less than 1% shop on the Internet with any frequency, and 89% have never shopped on the Net.
