Study reveals toy-buying reasons

Discount Store News, Feb 22, 1999

NEW YORK Adults do their toy shopping with two primary criteria in mind: fun and safety. According the the Roper Starch Youth Report, released just prior to this month's Toy Fair, other considerations include: if the toy or game is non-violent (64%), if it relates to a child's hobby or special interest (60%), if it has an educational component (59%, down five points from the previous survey in 1994), if it stimulates the child's imagination (55%); and if it is good for independent play (55%).

As for the kids' opinions, 58% of those age 6 to 17 said playing with their friends is a top priority, so social toys and games hold a great appeal. Playing sports and doing outdoor things was No. 2(53%).
