Zayre Taps Zarkin of HomeClub To Head Troubled Discount Division

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--Herbert J. Zarkin has been named chairman of Zayre Stores, filling the vacancy created when Malcolm Sherman stepped down from that post last July.

Zarkin assumes responsibility for the fourth largest discount store chain in the country whose sales and earnings levels have been slipping since early 1987. Reports for the fourth quarter ended Jan. 30 state the division suffered a gross income loss of nearly $17 million for the quarter, and about $14 million in losses for the year.

Reporting to Zarkin are: Stanley M. Adler, Zayre Stores president; Robert Alger, senior executive vice president, operations and distribution services; Donald G. Campbell, senior vp, finance and administration; and Robert Brummer, senior vp, human resources.

Zarkin has been with the Zayre organization since 1961, when he started as a stockboy. His promotions include store manager; sales promotion manager; executive vp, marketing, advertising, sales promotion and real estate; and HomeClub president in 1986.
