DSN Census Examines Productivity, Products

Meijer in the Midwest, Fedco on the West Coast and Ann & Hope in the Northeast operated the most productive discount department stores last year, according to calculations from DSN's Top 100 list of leading discounters.

Fedco, the Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based traditional discount store which maintains a membership policy, averaged more than $58 million in sales per store, while Meijer, the superstore chain based in Grand Rapids, Mich., led full-line stores in sales space productivity with $355 per square foot last year. Sales per store at unheralded Providence, R.I.-based Ann & Hope were $43 million, well above the averages registered by such industry giants as K mart, $10 million per store, Wal-Mart, $11.9 million, and Target, $16.7 million. The figures are not weighted to take into account stores opened during the year.

DSN's Annual Industry Report: Part II, beginning on page 27, also examines discount sales by department and reviews merchandising developments the past 18 months.
