Ames revamps Vt. stores to meet Wal-Mart threat - Ames Department Stores Inc.; Vermont; Wal-Mart Stores Inc

Discount Store News, August 21, 1995 by Richard Halverson

Examples include: Fruit of the Loom long-sleeve T-shirt, $5.94, compared to $9.99 elsewhere; and Miss Juli turtle neck body suit, $5.94, against $9.99 at other discounters.

The special buys program also extends to hard lines, Huber said, such as the Miracle Thaw as-seen-on-TV defroster, $19.94, compared to $29.99 on TV; and Ohio Art Michael Jordan Wallball, $2.94, compared to $6.99.

On a rotating basis, each Arnes store participates in the special buys program. Typically, the special buys are large enough only to stock 50 or so stores, Huber said, but the micromarketing breakdown of Ames units into resort, ethnic and college categories makes it feasible to buy closeout goods in smaller quantities.
