The Anderson's Hones Mix; Adopts New |Shop' Approach
MAUMEE, Ohio - The Anderson's, a six-unit discounter, has joined a growing list of retailers redefining their "core" categories and creating merchandise "shops" for a category killer presentation in key departments.
The Anderson's has already worked a new Pet Care center and a Lawn & Garden shop into its stores - complete with new signs and lighting - and is soon to begin work on a section called, "The Uncommon Market," offering specialty foods, wine, flower shop, deli, produce and bakery goods.
Other chains which have developed similar shop environments include Secaucus, N.J.-based Jamesway; Henderson, N.C.-based Rose's, and Cincinnati-based Van Leunen's.

The new store-within-a-store format at The Anderson's is expected to be integrated into the store layout by some time next year and will focus on 10 core areas. In addition to Pet Care, Lawn & Garden and the Uncommon Market, the other seven key store categories will include: Auto Care, Home Projects (such as home decor and building supplies), Leisure Time, Workwear Shop, Home/Office Products, hardware department and a Christmas Shop.
The shop approach to the various merchandise categories is designed to create more of a destination center for key items by honing assortments and bringing related goods under one umbrella.
The family-owned chain operates stores that average 110,000 square feet in Columbus (two locations), Toledo, Maumee and Northwood, Ohio, and in Delphi, Ind. Annual sales for 1990 were about $130 million.
