ShopKo Takes On |Soft' Edge

PHOTO : ShopKo, Ashwaubenon, Wis.: At Vision 2000, the discounter abandons its |discount store orange' for the more subtle, trendier gray, as shown in this apparel department. The renovation also includes lighted graphics, natural wood fixtures and trak lighting.

PHOTO : In health, the optical and pharmacy departments are grouped together in one area, with the wood-look flooring and gray vinyl in aisles.

PHOTO : In this sporting goods department shoppers are guided with clean, clear overhead signage over stocked endcaps.

PHOTO : The toy department gondolas are angled at 45 degrees instead of the usual 90 degrees, from the center power aisle and racetrack. Overhead signage spotlights such brands as Lego, Mattel, Little Tikes, Playskool and Fisher-Price.

PHOTO : Vision 2000's Music and Movies department features tapes, CDs, movie videos and portable stereos.
