Smith will now be responsible for merchandising all the hard lines and fashions for the discounter. Also reporting to Smith will be William Underwood, senior vice president, general merchandise.
Smith's promotion follows an earlier announcement that Kmart Apparel would be renamed Kmart Fashions. The name change was part of the restructuring of the division which will now operate out of Kmart's corporate headquarters in Troy rather than as a separate entity that currently operates out of offices in North Bergen, N.J.
According to the company, the apparel distribution center will remain in the North Bergen facility, but the merchandising staff will begin the move back to Troy early in 1992.
