Peter Hayes Takes Helm Of Family Dollar Stores

MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Discount industry veteran Peter Hayes has joined Family Dollar Stores as president and chief operating officer, and also as a member of the chain's board of directors. In his new position, Hayes takes charge of 1,692 Family Dollar stores in a 27-state territory, and reports to Leon Levine, chairman and chief executive officer.

Levine noted that Hayes is well equipped to assume the post, bringing to the company "strengths in merchandising, both soft goods and hard lines, and operations."

Hayes had resigned as president of Child World last January, having held the position with the toy retailer since June 1988. His extensive retail background includes Gold Circle where he was chairman and chief executive officer and Hills Department Stores, where he was senior vice president and general merchandise manager.
