Woolworth Expands International Business

NEW YORK -- Woolworth Corp. has once again expanded its international business through the acquisition of two athletic footwear and apparel chains in England and the Netherlands.

Following the acquisitions, Woolworth will operate a total of 47 specialty athletic stores in four European countries. The two other countries are Germany and Belgium. The British company, Freedom Sportsline Ltd., operates nine 1,000 square foot stores under the name Freedom in eight cities. The purchase in the Netherlands involved Sportsworld B.V., which is based in Amsterdam and operates five stores.
