More than one-third of rock quarries in Central and East Central Texas are operating without proper permits, state regulators say. A month-long audit by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has also found frequent violations, including quarries with improper management practices and inadequate water drainage.
Of 62 rock mines audited in the commission's Waco region through last week, 22 were found to be operating without permits, says John Steib, TCEQ deputy director for compliance and enforcement, reports the Associated Press.
