Pit & Quarry, August, 2004

Neighbors of a proposed rock quarry approved by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors filed suit seeking new environmental studies. Supervisors gave final approval last month for development of the Handley Ranch Quarry in Chualar. Granite Construction Co., which will develop the Handley Ranch Quarry, expected to have the mine in operation by the end of the year.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors approved the project on a 4-0 vote. Janet Brennan, supervising planner of Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District, says emissions from the quarry operations will exceed the district's limit of nitrogen oxides pollutants by 409.5 lb. a day. The district threshold is 137 lb. daily. The agency recommended mitigation programs, but county staff concluded that some of the impacts may be unavoidable and the benefits of the project override air-quality concerns. The permit is for 120 years on 330 acres of the 1,230-acre Handley Ranch on the Chualar foothills, reports The Salinas Californian.
