Business groups are pushing Bush and Congress

Modern Machine Shop, March, 2001

Business groups are pushing Bush and Congress to undo Clinton rules. The organizations are hoping their support of the new President will be rewarded on a number of fronts. They want quick action to overturn the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's ergonomics regulation. The regulation went into effect on January 16, but it will not be enforced until October.

It requires employers to establish programs to reduce injuries caused by repetitive motion tasks or other work activities that may strain muscles, joints or ligaments. The Small Business Administration estimates the regulation will cost employers $l8 billion. Business groups will push Congress to use the Congressional Review Act to overturn the regulation. Winning such a vote will be difficult, but the business community is determined to stop the regulation.
