Swivelhead spindle VMC designed fop single setups—Chiron America

Modern Machine Shop, March, 2008

With seven CNC-controlled axes, Chiron's FZ 12K S with swivelhead offers various machining options in one setup, from the bar. Capable of high-precision, automated, six-side machining, the VMC is suited for machining watch casings, medical parts or hydraulic components. Medical applications for this machine include orthopedic devices, such as larger implants, bone plates, hip sockets and surgical instruments made of special plastics, titanium and steel.

The VMC features a full turning spindle with a 65-mm bar diameter capacity as well as a bar feeder and a workpiece turning unit. By means of synchronous technology, the axes accelerate with as much as 1.5 G of force to a maximum speed of 75 m per minute. The motor spindle accelerates to 24.000 rpm ill 1.2 seconds. Tool change takes 0.9 seconds, reducing the chip-to-chip time to 2.4 seconds.

The VMC incorporates a swivelhead spindle for single-setup machining of complex parts. It has a swiveling range of -10 degrees to 100 degrees. X-, Y- and Z-axis travel is 21", 12.5" and 14", respectively.
