Manufacturing Industry

It's Exemplary

Modern Machine Shop, April, 2003 by Katherine A. Kelley

A center in Dayton seems to have found a way to be successful in its machine trades program. The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) has received two Exemplary Status Awards and one Promising Practice Award from the U.S. Department of Education. Only seven programs were designated exemplary.

It is the first time one school received two exemplary status awards in one year. MVCTC received the awards in its trades program and its school-to-apprenticeship program. The machine trades program also has the National Institute for Metalworking Skills certification. It has a partnership with the Dayton Tooling and Machining Association, which provides apprenticeship placements, scholarships for post-secondary education and information on industry trends. The school-to-apprenticeship program provides hands-on experience in a professional work environment. Some students participate in alternating 2-week work-based, 2-week school-based schedules.
