A salute to certification
Modern Machine Shop, May, 2003 by Katherine A. Kelley
There have been several mentions in this magazine about NIMS certification and its increasing importance. Maybe your company has looked into it, or maybe some of your programs or employees are certified. But did you ever think that the military would get involved in this certification? Apparently that time has come.
The U.S. Army Ordnance Mechanical Maintenance School's machinist training program has been accredited by NIMS. The Army sees the benefit in the fact that the credentials are portable, so soldiers will find them useful in the military and in careers after their service. More than 20 soldiers have at least one NIMS credential, with more scheduled shortly. The army also sees this as motivating for the soldiers. That seems fitting now, at a time when keeping soldier morale up is essential.
