Economists are divided

Modern Machine Shop, Sept, 2004

Economists are divided in their assessment of the outlook for inflation. Some argue that inflation will remain tranquil because of resource slack and strong productivity gains. Others are not so sure. For the past several years, declines in unit labor costs have acted to limit the increases in prices.

But that moderating influence seems to be ending. Unit labor costs rose 0.8 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter, but many analysts believe that number will be revised upward as a result of the downward revision in first quarter Gross Domestic Product.
