The Paperboard Packaging Advantage

Paperboard packaging provides advantages in the distribution, marketing, protection and preservation of thousands of consumer goods. Studies show that people prefer packaging made from renewable and recyclable materials compared to packaging made with less material if that material cannot be renewed or recycled. The key is what the material is made from in the first place.

Paperboard is a renewable resource. Paperboard packaging ultimately begins with a renewable and recyclable resource--wood fiber. Unlike metal ore, petroleum, or other raw materials used for packaging, wood fiber is the only truly renewable packaging material in use today. Managing this renewable forest resource and using it wisely is an industry-wide priority.

Paperboard packaging is recyclable--"Closing the Loop". A significant amount of the industry's raw material needs - 70 percent - is met with recovered paper fibers. Today, more than half of the folding cartons found in supermarkets are made from 100 percent recycled paperboard. Recycled paperboard producers rely on a wide range of recovered paper grades, including paperboard, mixed paper, and corrugated fiber, to make quality products.
