Revenue, surpluses and salaries of industry associations generally remain healthy, according to our continuing survey of groups' latest income tax filings (Form 990s) with IRS. Previous reports have included groups such as NAB, Assn. of Local TV Stations (ALTV), CableLabs, CATA, C-SPAN, EIA, Satellite Bcstg. & Communications Assn.
MPAA revenue dipped slightly in most recent tax year, according to return filed last month, to $35.7 million from $36.7 million year ago, resulting in $165,103 deficit for year. Biggest expense was salaries, totaling $11.4 million, including Pres. Jack Valenti's $981,473 from MPAA and $51,657 from corporation that owns MPAA hq. Other top salaries include $332,778 for Senior Vp William Baker, $243,360 for Senior Vp Simon Barsky, $201,485 for CFO John Collins, $165,754 for Senior Vp Fritz Attaway. Group spent $8.1 million on Worldwide Antipiracy Fund, $3 million on investigations, $2.9 million on legal fees. Income from film rating system was $3.7 million.

NCTA had revenue of $37.7 million in FY 1997, vs. expenses of $38.4 million, with $7.3 million net assets at year-end. Bulk of revenue came from membership dues ($23.3 million) and program services ($13.7 million) such as annual conference ($9.2 million). Assn. spent $7.3 million on salaries, with Pres. Decker Anstrom receiving $821,634. NCTA listed lobbying expenses of $3.3 million.
Radio Ad Bureau (RAB) Pres. Gary Fries was paid $404,500 in 1997, received no bonus or other allowances. Salaries of exec.
vps were $189,000 each for George Hyde, Ron Ruth and Judy Carlough, while Exec. Vp Mike Mahone was paid $170,000. RAB had 1997 income of $7.47 million, expenses of $7.79 million.
RTNDA had $3.5 million revenue for year, mostly from convention, and $3.2 million expense, for $301,053 surplus. Salaries totaled $635,366, including $118,474 for Pres. Barbara Cochran. Group also spent $438,528 on conferences, conventions, meetings.
MSTV revenue increased to $1.93 million in year ended June 30 from $1.7 million previous year, largely because of $242,291 in Model HDTV Station revenue that it collected and passed on. Expenses totaled nearly $2 million, for deficit of $48,331. Total salaries were $672,289, including $215,000 for Pres. Margita White (down from $233,000 that included $35,000 pension adjustment), $195,000 for Senior Vp Victor Tawil (vs. $145,000 when he was vp). Group spent $707,188 on legal fees.
Media Access Project had $276,380 revenue for year and $249,920 expense, for surplus of $26,460. Salaries totaled $186,554, including $82,250 for Pres. Andrew Schwartzman and $62,000 for Exec. Dir. Gigi Sohn. Legal fee revenue totaled $52,027, gifts and grants $154,652. Center for Media Education reported 1997 income of $902,790, expenses of $1.03 million. Wife-husband team of Pres. Kathryn Montgomery and Exec. Dir.
Jeffrey Chester each was paid $59,431, plus $3,998 in other benefits.
American Ad Federation posted $4.28 million revenue in most recent fiscal year and $4.23 million expenditures, for $47,116 surplus. Salaries totaled $1.66 million, including $195,820 for Pres. Wallace Snyder.
Correction: EIA had surplus of $11.1 million on its most recent tax return, rather than deficit (TVD Dec 14 p6).
