Embargo on using NFL highlights - National Football League

Television Digest with Consumer Electronics, March 23, 1998

Embargo on using NFL highlights in local stations' pregame and postgame shows "discriminates against free, local, over-the-air television stations," ALTV Pres. James Hedlund said in letter to FCC Chmn. Kennard. NFL reportedly is imposing embargo in bid to improve value of rights bought by networks.

Hedlund called embargo "patently unfair and contrary to the public Interest," particularly since it wouldn't apply to ESPN or possibly to regional sports networks, which he called "a blatant attempt to shift viewing away" from local stations. ALTV said FCC should examine private NFL contracts "if they are preclusive and restrict output."
