TV and cable networks - planned coverage of the visit of Pope John Paul to Cubaby TV and cable networks

Television Digest with Consumer Electronics, Jan 5, 1998

TV and cable networks planning to cover Pope John Paul's Jan. 21-25 visit to Cuba have asked U.S. govt. for waiver of 1996 law that limits U.S. companies to spending no more than $100 per day to support employees in Cuba. CNN, which is only U.S. news organization with bureau in Havana, said its regular hotel per-night rate has been increased to nearly $200 from $70 through Pope's visit.

Networks are negotiating with Cuban govt. seeking reduction in rights fees being charged for coverage of some of Pope's activities. They include up to $100,000 to use footage of papal masses in Cuba, according to AP.
